The easier way to get started is to make a simple 4 strand scoubidou, it is also the most common scoubidou, you can do it has follows:
Take two strings, you have two options to start it; the first one is to simply bend them and make a "blind knot" (left image); the other one is to put them around something like a pen.
At this point you just have to pull all the strands by the tips. The first knot is always the hardest, after that you have the previous knot to hold the strands in their place.
After some knots, a pattern is visible:
Knowing this you can finish a scoubidou, but there's some more things you can do with only four strands.
In the pictures above i just passed each strand on top of the next strand, always doing it clockwise; if you make it in the other direction (anti-clockwise) you also invert the "stripes" in the final pattern.
Try inverting every 3 or 4 knots and you will get a zig-zag pattern; as a particular case, if you invert the direction every knot, you will get the square pattern often used in scoubidou.
